I understand why this doesn't matter to most people. But for someone who has spent his entire adult life pursuing this genre called jazz, I get a little irked with some of the crude vernacular. Here are five of my least favorite uses of the word jazz.
1. Preceded by a definite article- "My son really likes the jazz."
2. Used in place of the word spice- "Just jazz it up a little."
3. Used as a musical substance to be added to other musical substances- "This band plays mostly rock with some jazz in it."
4. Used in place of the word excited- "I'm really jazzed about my new job."
And now for my least favorite use of the word:
5. Used with the suffix -y: "I like this song, because it's really jazzy."
A related dislike of mine is when people use the abbreviated word "improv" when they could add one syllable and say "improvise." "Improv" should only be used to abbreviate "improvisation" in my opinion. What are some of your pet peaves with music lingo?
